In a time of incredible uncertainty in our day-to-day lives we thought that we would start showcasing some of the incredible small businesses, makers, freelancers and social enterprises that make the Southside what it is!
Shop local and keep it south, let’s try to help all of the local Southsiders who need customers just now! However, please don’t forget to wash your hands more than usual and if you are experiencing any symptoms then please don’t go out.
The Glad Cafe - www.thegladcafe.co.uk
At the point of writing, The Glad Cafe has just shut their doors for the foreseeable future! As a Community Interest Company they work hard to support their sister charity the Glad Foundation, and their Co-operative venture Glad Rags Thrift Shop. The Glad Foundation runs free and affordable music workshops for local people.
They have just set up a crowdfunder to try and keep them up and running once they reopen.
This venue is not your usual music venue! Ran by the guys from New Hell Fire Club, they solely live to help musicians, artists, and craftspeople self fund, promote, and create their own art. In 2019, they finally met their first long term target of opening a 150 capacity music and arts centre in Glasgow, called The Ice Box Arts And Music Centre,
They are currently shut just now but like always they have some big plans up their sleeve to help keep supporting their staff and musicians as much as possible. You can support them on GoFundMe or through Patreon.
Some Great Reward - https://www.somegreatreward.scot/
Still going strong is Some Great Reward! A cafe and record store in one, what more could you want when you are looking for a coffee and some great music? They have put in some extra house rules to keep us all safe such as paying with contactless, no water jugs on the table and not accepting reusable cups. Go grab your morning coffee and have a wee chill here this week.
Merry-go-round - www.merrygoroundglasgow.co.uk
Not one to give up after having to close their events space, merry-go-round have already made the move to using Zoom to stream their classes and workshops online. Just head to their events page on Facebook and there will be a wee link on the events page so that you can join the class! Merry-go-round also has not shut their shop or parenting room either so is means you still have access to all your baby essentials, and can still pop in for a nappy change and a cuppa.
Sweet Recreation - sweetrecreation.co.uk
Still bracing the storm, Sweet Recreation haven’t shut their doors as of yet! Banging beers and awesome burgers. If you aren’t self-isolating or don’t have any of the symptoms and are looking for somewhere to chill out this evening then this is the place for you!
Rotating tap list and loads of beer from around the world, cocktails, wine and chilled out vibes.
Southside Fringe - www.southsidefringe.org.uk
We had to mention ourselves here too! We have just launched some brand new merch created by the incredibly talented Kaitlin Mechan! Worst time ever to launch new products isn’t it? We would be super, super grateful if you could buy a Southside Fringe Map Print (available in blue or orange) or a #keepitsouth Mug. We also rely heavily on donations and would also be stoked if you have anything spare to give a donation to your local community festival! We love you Southside!
Shop local, keep it south!
